Umpire Doug Harvey and manager Whitey Herzog, who each fell one vote short of glory in 2007, were voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday by the honor shrine's veterans committee.
Both Herzog, who guided St. Louis to the 1982 World Series crown, and Harvey, an umpire for 31 Major League Baseball seasons before retiring in 1992, will be enshrined at ceremonies next July 25 at Cooperstown, New York.
"I don't think I would've had my heart broken if I'd missed by another vote or two, but I'm damn happy it's over," Herzog said.
Ozzie Smith, a former player under Herzog and a Hall of Fame shortstop, was among the 16-member panel who voted on entrants, with 12 votes needed for election. Harvey was marked on 15 ballots and Herzog on 14 this time.
"I think he was one of the guys who started managers looking at doing more creative things," Smith said of Herzog, who spent two decades managing in the major leagues.
Herzog, 78, was the 19th manager voted into the Hall of Fame while Harvey, 79, is the ninth umpire in the honor shrine.
