JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Reuters) - Korie Lucious made a three-point shot at the buzzer to lift Michigan State past Maryland 85-83 in the NCAA's collegiate basketball tournament second round Sunday.
Midwest region fifth seed Michigan State, who lost starting guard Kalin Lucas to a leg injury, had led by 16 points in the second half over fourth seed Maryland, but trailed by one with six seconds left before Lucious converted the three-pointer.
"When Kalin went down we all rallied around him and told him with or without you we got your back and we're going to get this win for you," Lucious told reporters.
Michigan State will meet ninth seed Northern Iowa in the next round.
The West region top seed Syracuse, who are still without injured center Arinze Onuaku, had a much easier time in an 87-65 rout of Gonzaga and will now meet fifth seed Butler, who beat Murray State Saturday.
In the South, Nolan Smith scored 20 points to help the Duke Blue Devils to a 68-53 victory over California. Duke will now meet fourth seed Purdue who beat fifth seed Texas A&M 63-61 in overtime.
In the day's biggest upset, East fourth seed Wisconsin were beaten 87-69 by the 12th-seeded Cornell after Louis Dale scored 26 points and Ryan Wittman 24.
Cornell now meet top-seeded Kentucky Thursday.
East second seed West Virginia defeated 10th seed Missouri 68-59 to set up a Sweet 16 match against the 11th-seeded Washington Huskies.
Jordan Crawford scored 27 points for West sixth seed Xavier in their 71-68 victory over third seeded Pittsburgh. Xavier now meet second seed Kansas State in the next round.
