Gamboa, Lopez defended their WBA belts

Yuriorkis Gamboa and Juan Manuel Lopez defended their belts and kept their perfect records intact by winning title fights in a separate matches on the same card.

Gamboa and Lopez are hoping their victories at Madison Square Garden will act as tune-ups for a title fight between the two.

Cuban Gamboa successfully defended his World Boxing Association featherweight championship with a fourth round knockout of Whyber Garcia of Panama.

Gamboa improved his unbeaten record to 16-0 with 14 knockouts by flooring Garcia, 22-7 with 15 knockouts, sending the challenger to the canvas face first.

Puerto Rico's Lopez survived a scare, posting a difficult unanimous 12 round decision over Rogers Mtagwa of Tanzania to retain his World Boxing Organization junior featherweight belt.

Lopez, 27-0 with 24 knockouts, knocked Mtagwa down in the fifth, then had to hang on during the 12th for the victory.

Lopez won on all three judges' scorecards by scores of 116-111, 114-113, 115-111.
