American gridiron hero Ben Roethlisberger strongly denied allegations in a lawsuit that he raped an employee of luxury Nevada resort where he stayed for a celebrity golf tournament.
"The allegations against me are reckless and false," Roethlisberger said . "I am going to fight to protect my family and my reputation."
Roethlisberger made his comments in a prepared statement during a news conference Thursday at the club's training facility, refusing to take questions from reporters.
"I did not sexually assault the woman," said Roethlisberger. "Saturday was the first that I learned of her accusations. I would never, ever force myself on a woman.
"As much as I would like to answer everyone's questions, I am going to respect the legal process, and I am confident that the truth will prevail."
A civil lawsuit was filed in Nevada last week by a female employee of the Lake Tahoe hotel. No criminal charges have been filed.
The two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback was in Lake Tahoe for a celebrity golf tournament in July 2008 when the alleged assault happened.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the suit contains 12 claims, including sexual assault and battery and false imprisonment.
