Rachel Alexandra wins U.S. Horse of Year award

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rachel Alexandra, who became the first filly to win the Preakness Stakes since 1924 and won all eight of her races in 2009, was named U.S. Horse of the Year on Monday.

The three-year-old, Kentucky-bred bay finished ahead of the undefeated mare Zenyatta 130-99 in Eclipse Award voting by members of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers Association.

Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird was named the top three-year-old male horse, the NTRA announced at a ceremony at a Beverly Hills hotel.
