The Kansas City Chiefs Friday named Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley their new head coach, five days after the Cardinals narrowly lost to Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl.

As offensive coordinator of the Cardinals for the past two National Football League seasons, Haley built one of the league's highest-octane offenses.

Introduced as the 11th coach in Chiefs history at a news conference on Friday, Haley said it had been a "whirlwind" week.

"I am extremely excited and proud to be a part of the Kansas City Chiefs family and the Kansas City community," Haley said. "I am looking forward to working with (general manager) Scott (Pioli) to re-establish the winning tradition that the tremendous fans in Kansas City deserve."

Pioli, who was named the team's general manager on January 13, pointed to a number of reasons for selecting Haley, including having a working relationship when both were with the New York Jets organization in the late-1990s.

"Todd is very bright, is extremely dedicated and extremely strong-willed," Pioli said. "We have a very similar football family background in terms of the people we worked with."

Haley, who will turn 42 on February 28, succeeds Herm Edwards, who went just 15-33 with the Chiefs before being fired on January 23.

The Chiefs lost 21 of their last 23 games overall under Edwards, who coached the New York Jets for five seasons prior to his stint in Kansas City. Edwards led the Jets to three playoff berths and owns just a 54-74 record overall.
