Eagles bring in Garcia with McNabb doubtful

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The Philadelphia Eagles have signed free agent quarterback Jeff Garcia on a one-year deal to cover for their sudden shortage in the key position.

Starting quarterback Donovan McNabb suffered a fractured rib in the opening day win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and is in doubt for the next game at the New Orleans Saints.

Back-up Michael Vick remains suspended until the third week of the season, leaving the Eagles with only Kevin Kolb available for the game.

The 39-year-old Garcia, who spent the 2009 training camp with the Oakland Raiders but was cut before the start of the campaign, was with the Eagles in 2006 and helped them into a playoff spot.

"It is a unique situation because Michael is suspended and Donovan's banged up. So we don't know how long Donovan's going to be and at the same time we need a second quarterback in there this weekend," said Eagles head coach Andy Reid.

McNabb said he has not ruled out making Sunday's game.

"Anything can happen. It's just Monday right now, but if Friday and Saturday come along and I'm feeling a lot better, you just never know," he said.

Vick's suspension is the final stage of his return to the NFL after spending 18 months in jail for his role in a dog fighting ring.
